1 WHEREAS, in the late 1800's and the early 1400's Dr. Justus Ohage, Public Health Commissioner for the
2 City of Saint Paul, raised the funds and even mortgaged his own home to purchase Haniet Island and gave
3 of his time and energy to direct the opening and beautification of the public baths once located on Harriet
4 Island; and
5 WHEREAS, on May 26, 1900 Dr. Ohage gave the land of Harriet Island and the public baths to the City of
6 Saint Paul in his efforts to promote good public health practices and healthy living; and
7 WHEI2EAS, Dr. Ohage's gift of Harriet Island and other public health measures paid off for the City of
8 Saint Paul when in 1904 at the St. Louis World's Fair, the City of Saint Paul was declared the healthiest city
9 in the world, and
1 o WHEREAS, Harriet Island on the Mississippi River has, over the past 100 years, continued to be used as a
11 recreational gathering place; and
12 WHEREAS, with the impending completion of the Harriet Island Phase I Project; we have created new
13 places that will help us to better serve the needs of our community; and
14 WHEREAS, one of these places is a great lawn expanse, connecting various venues of Harriet Island;
15 NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council of the City of Saint Paul, that on the 100 year
16 anniversary of the gift to the City of Saint Paul that the area making up the great lawn be named The Ohage
17 Great Lawn, an honor fitting the grandness of Dr. Ohage's gift.

Dr. Justus Ohage donated the �and of Harriet Island to the City of Saint Paul 100 years ago this May 26, 2000. In order
to recognize his work and gift the City of Saint Paul would like to name the great lawn on Harriet Island the Ohage
Great Lawn at a ceremony to be held on Harriet Island on Friday, May 26, 2000.
