WHEREAS, the Mississippi River is an important part of the cultural
heritage of the people of St. Paul and the ten states along its reaches,
and
WHEREAS, ovex the years garbage and sewage was dumped into the river;
chemical dumping made fish unsafe to eat; and wetlands were filled
for development, and
WHEREAS, the Mississippi River Revival festival is being organized to
reawaken interest in the river and will bring together all those who
have an interest in the river -- recreation, users, musicians, biologists,
poets, nature lovers, and people who fish, and
WHEREAS, on August 1, poetry, music, dance, and other entertainment will
fill the air on Harriet Island, and
WHEREAS, the banks of the River is where our city began and continues
to closely be tied to our jobs, recreation, and cultural life, therefore
be it
RESOLVED, that the St. Paul City Council support the planning of the
Mississippi River Revival, and be it further
RESOLVED, that the St. Paul City Council encourage all citizens to celebrate
and participate in the revival on August 1, 1982, at Harriet Island.
