DESCRIPTION OF �dORK
General Statement of Duties: Performs skilled laboring and technical work
feeding and caring for marine animals, training sea lions and presenting
shows and maintaining the correct aquatic environment; and performs related
duties as required.
Supervision Received: Works under the technical supervision of the Zoo
Foreman and the administrative supervision of the Zoo Director.
Supervision Exercised: Exercises within the unit immediate technicaY
supervision over lower level clerical and laboring workers.
TYPICAL DUTIES PERFORMED
_ The listed examples may not include all duties performed by all positions
in this class.
Organizes and presents the "Sparky the Seal" show at scheduled times during
the summer season; presents winter training sessions for the public.
Acquires and trains the California sea lions necessary for a trained
sea lion act; organizes an acceptable land and water seal lion show
for presentation in the arena at scheduled times.
Regulates the diets and provides the care necessary for good health and
breeding success for all animals at the Marine Ma�al unit.
Keeps records and reports necessary for compliance with Federal regulations
applicable to the health and welfare of marine mammals.
Assists the veterinarian in observations on the health of all animals
in this unit by reporting problems and keeping records.
Assists in administering treatment as prescribed by the veterinarian,
including the catching and restraint of animals needing treatment.
Performs all maintenance on pumps and filters.
Supervises zoo keepers assigned to assist in the unit and the attendant
cashiers vending fish for feeder sea lions; instructs other zoo keepers
assigned as relief.
Acts for the City to maintain order and prevent vandalism in the buil.dings
and exhibits designated as the Marine Mammal Unit, including Monkey
Island and the Fish House.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Working knowledge of the hazards associated with animal handling and
related safety and precautionary measures.
Considerable knowledge of the characteristics and habits of marine mammals.
Some ability to lift and move moderately heavy objects.
Ability to perform as a showman with a sea lion act on stage.
Ability to train sea lions to perform in a public show.
Ability to maintain hydraulic systems.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Three years' experience as a Marine Mammal trainer at least one year
of which has been involved in presenting Marine Mammal shows to
the public.
