The minutes of the meeting of February 9 , 1982 , were anproved as dis-
tributed to the members . �
Alice Bijjani introduced Jeanne Shaw, of the housing code office , who
would represent Ms . Bijjani at board meetings in the event the latter
�tas unable to attend.

SUBJF.CT: Request time extension to complete Item #7 , as listed in . the
city' s letter of 1/6/82 , requiring fire separation of heating plant , and
request variance of Item #10 , requiring self-closing devices on all apart-
ment doors within stair enclosure , because devices would detract from
glass paneling of the doors .

PROCEEDINGS: Mr. Zahn stated that zoning for three units had been approved
y the Zoning Board recently. He lived on the first floor and rented out
the five-room second floor and three-room third floor units . He wished to
retain the architectural features of the house in their original state as
much as possible . If required to put wire-glass panels and self-closing
devices on the entrance doors , he felt it would detract from their distinc-
tive appearance . Another item he wished to appeal , which he had not listed
in his original application, was for a variance on window area in the living
room of the third floor unit. Under code , 80 of floor area was req�ired,
an d the room had 7. 5a . He intended to put in a skylig;�t within the nex�
couple of years , but it was costly and he did not feel he could afford to
at this time. As to the fire separation of the heating plant , he planned
to put in a sprinkling system above the boiler area and install a fire-door,
but asked for an extension of time until fall of 1982 .
Alice Bijjani explained the need for self-closing devices and said there
were some types which were less obtrusive than others . She said the glass
panels in the entrance doors were plate glass , not particularly decorative ,
and the use of wixe-glass panels would not spoil their appearance, particul-
arly if applied to the outside face of the doors and finished off �rith some
type of molding.
BOARD ACTION: Mr. Tilton moved that a variance of Section 34 . 14, pertain-
ing to lig t and ventilation , be granted, to permit continued occupancy of
thir3 floor unit where light is slightly deficient. r7r. Knutson seconded.
MOTION CARRIED.
THE VOTE: Ayes - 4 Nays - 0 Abstentions - 0
BOARD ACTION: Mr. Tilton moved to grant an extension of time to Sept . 15 ,
1 8 , or installation of a sprinkler system and fire-doors separating
the heating plant from the occupied areas of the property. Chairman
�lassman seconded. MOTION CARRIED.
THE VOTE : Ayes - 4 Nays - 0 Abstentions - 0
BOARD ACTION: Chairman Glassman moved that a variance of Section 35 .03,
pertaining to the rec{uirements of self-closing devices an d wire-glass
panels in entrance doors , be denied. Mr. Tilton seconded. MOTION CARRIED.

PROCEEDIIdGS : Mr. Reynolds stated that all units in the building had
private bathroom facilities except for the two units on third floor,
which shared a bathroom. He said these units are never rented to more
than one person. .

Mr. Reynolds said the monthly rents for the two units were very reasonable ,
$145 for one and $155 for the other, making them attractive to college
students with limited resources . Except for the shared b athroom situation ,
all remaining work listed in the city` s letter of 1/27/82 would be done.
BOARD ACTION: D4r. Tilton moved that a variance o£ Section 34. 11 be granted,
perinitting residents of Apts . #9 and #10 to share use of one bathroom, on
condition that occupants of no other units be permitted to share its use ,
�Chat no more than four persons occupy the two units , and that all remain:-
ing work orders be comnleted in timely fashion. Mr. I�nutson seconded.
MOTION CARRIED.
