RE: Claim against the City of St. Paul by Eric Hagen
On August 26, 1980, plaintiff 's car collided with a Grey Goose
bus which was operated by Robert Bonthron. The accident occur ed
at the intersection of Snelling and Hoyt Avenues in the City
of St. Paul as plaintiff Eric Hagen was leaving the State Fai rounds.
At the time, one traffic control officer, a Harold Turquist,
a neighborhood assistance officer, was directing traffic. At
approximately 9:00 p.m. plaintiff was waiting for signa.ls fro
Mr. Turquist before proceeding onto Snelling Avenue. Mr. Tur uist
was standing in the northbound traffic lanes and had brought
that traffic to a stop. Mr. Turquist then directed the eastb und
traffic on Hoyt to proceed and plaintiff drove forward onto
Snellin. Suddenly, Mr. Turcuist saw that an approaching bus
travelling in a southbound direction on Snelling was not goin
to stop. He ran over to the southbound lanes and attempted
to signal the driver to stop by waiving a red traffic wand.
The bus did not stop, but drove through the intersection and
it struck Mr. Hagen s car broadside. Upon impact, Mr. Ha.gen'
car was pushed south on Snelling Avenue where it came to a s p
and caught fire. Mr. Hagen was knocked unconscious and was
trapped in the car. Persons at the scene manaed to extrica e
Mr. Hagen and his passenger from the car. Plaintiff was tak
to St. Paul Ramsey Hospital. He had severe lacerations to t e
left side of his fact which have left permanent visable resi ual
scarring. He also had a pelvic fracture and chipped tooth.
He was eventually discharged from the hospital on September ,
1980. He remained at home for rest for an additional eight eeks .
Based on the foregoing, the City has settled the case for $1 ,000
and the Grey Goose Bus Lines will be paying an additional $2 ,000
in settlement of this case.
