The National Jobs With Peace Campaign, begun several years ago in San Francisco,
has focused attention on the negative impact of increasing levels of military
• spending upon our communities. It has recently called for a national Jobs With
Peace Week, Aprit 10-16, 1983. During this week, over 70 cities, towns and rurala
areas across the U.S. are undertaking a wide range of events geared to the specific
needs, concerns and interests of different groups. Forums, petitions, studies,
local rferenda and other projects planned during this week will make public
the social costs of Reagan's military escalation and propose concrete ideas for
corrnnunity renewal , job creation, rebuilding of our roads and alternative strategies
for meeting other basic human needs.
Minnesota Clergy and Laity Concerned is initiating Twin Cities participation in
Jobs With Peace Week. We are working with a number of peace, cortxnunity, religious
union and minority-based organizations to coordinate activities during the week.
A citizen's hearing is being planned, with testimony to be given in the areas
of: the impact of military spending increases and social spending cuts upon
Minnesotans; alternative spending priorities proposais; and specific community
action which can be taken to change these priorities. Supporting organizations
are sponsoring activities such as public educational dispiays and educational
forums as a part of Jobs With Peace Week. Endorsements are being sought from
county commissioners, city councils and a broad range af community-based
organizations. We hope your group can become involved too.
Specifically, we are asking you to:
