WHEREAS, the St. Paul City Council has been on record since 1980 in support
of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday; and
WHEREAS, the life and name of Martin Luther King, Jr, stands as a national
symbol of civil rights, justice and equality for all ; and
WHEREAS, our Nation's purpose and highest ideals can be further served by
having a holiday dedicated to the pursuit of peace and freedom; and
WHEREAS, on August 3, 1983, the United States House of Representatives, by
an overwhelming vote of 338-90 passed a bill designating the third Monday in
January a legal holiday in commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ; and
WHEREAS, the United States Senate has recently begun debating this most
important matter; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the St. Faul City Council calls upon
Senators David Durenberger and Rudy Boschwitz to join with their congressional
colleagues and adopt the Senate King Holiday Bill making the third Monday in
- January a legal holiday.
