WHEREAS, "Remember Rondo" is the official �h�me of a gala, three-day festival
commemorating the lives and times of a people, who once resided in the Rondo Avenue
Community, now referred to as the Summit-University area; and
LdHEr�EAS, Rondo was once the heart of a multi-ethnic neighborhood that witnessed
for over six decades the struggles , hopes , aspirations, and progress of Saint Paul 's
Black community; and
WHEREAS, the Rondo experience was profound for its Black residents as Rondo was
a place where they could strive to fulfill their ambitions, whether it be building a home,
owning and operating a business , or gathering, communicating, and celebrating. Many
people who have long since moved or migrated prospered from its affect; and
WHEREAS, Rondo Avenue with its horse-drawn street cars, trollies, and buses , as
a bustling residential and commercial strip of restaurants , barber shops , funeral homes
and grocery stores, community centers , dance halls, athletic teams , and marching bands
cease to exist in the late 1950's when homes and businesses were removed to malce way for
Interstate 94; and
4JHEREAS, the artery of the neighborhood was destroyed, fragmenting the community,
the esteem for a people and the symbolism of the Avenue lived on; and
WHEREAS, thousands of people will be attending the three-day festival ; and
WHEREAS, the "Remember Rondo" commemoration is significant as it seeks to unify
the total past and present Black, White, Native American, and Hispanic communities of the
area; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Saint Paul proudly
recognizes the rich and varied contributions of Rondo Avenue and its people to the City of
Saint Paul ; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Saint Paul joins with
Marvin Roger Anderson and Floyd G. Smaller, officers and members of the Rondo Avenue
Association to commemorate the spirit of Rondo Avenue; and
BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Saint Paul designates July 1-3, 1983, as
"Remember Rondo Days" in Saint Paul and encourage the people of Saint Paul to observe
this celebration by attending the activities at this three day event.
