St7BJECT: Request variance firom St. Pau1 Legislative Code, Section 34.13, per-
taining to light and ventilation in basement apartrnent, because of financia�
difficulty.
p�ppEARANCE: Wallace Johnson
PROGEEDINGS: Mr. Johnson stated the property was inspected and he was told the
light in the livingroom and kitchen was inadequate. He said his probleqn is -the
rents are reasonable and his taxes keen rising all the time. He does need the
bas�nent apartment rent to keep the building going. He is willing to put in
an escape window.
Alice Bijjani suggested to Mr. Johnson that he pu.t in a window in the bedroom
that opens totally, rather than a double hung window. That wauld bring the
ventilation up to what it should be and he would only need a variance on the , .
light which is presently 13 sq. ft.
BOARD ACI'ION: Bill Tilton moved to grant the variance on the light in the kitchen
and livi.ngroom on condition a proper escape window be installed in the beclroom by
June 1, 1985 and a proper fire wa11 be installecl within 30 days which would .

SUBJECT: R�uest variance from St. Pau1 Legislative Code, Section 34.13,
pertaining to light and ventilation, to allow for continued use of basement
apartrnent with window space of 60 of floor space, because of practical difficulty.
APPF.,ARANCE: Phil Chalmers
� PROCEIDINGS: Mr. Chalmers stated he would like a variance in the light which
is 6� of the floor space instead of the required 80. He is willing to put in
an escape window which will be approximately 10 sq. ft.
Alice Bijjani felt that by putting in the escape window it would provide sufficient
ventilation so the variance would only be needed on the light. She said they are
combin�ng the basement area with the first floor, and it should be limited to no
more than four persons for occupancy �.nd there should be no stove or rei'rigerator
in the basement area.
BOARD ACTION: Bill Tilton moved to grant the variance on the �light requirement
on condition he put in an escape window which is approximately 10 sq. ft. and
that a sepaxation wall be installecl between the heating area and the apartrnex�.t

PROCEEDINGS: Mr. Behr explained the property was inherited by him and his sisters
and he is living in the downstairs unit. There are three bathrcc�ns, one-on the
first floor & one on second,with three tenants sharing the bath. They normally
rent to only one individual and they plan to continue this way.
