00-120CouncilFile# pp.l2.p OR{GINAL LUTI NT,�"AU,YI„�iINNESOTA Presented Referred To GreenSheet# 1a035a+ a� Committee Date WHEREAS, the Saint Paul Cultural Sales Tax Revitalization (Cultural STAR) Program was estab(ished in 1994 to improve cultural opportunities for the citizens of Saint Paul; and 3 WHEREAS, the focus of spending in the Cultural STAR Program is within the boundaries ofthe City's Cultural 4 District which aze currently defined as "the geographic area bordered by Interstate 94 on the north, Cedar Street on 5 the east, Kellogg Boulevard on the south and John Ireland Boulevard to the west;" and 6 WHEREAS, the Science Museum of Minnesota and the Science Gazdens has recently moved from a location within 7 the City's Cultural District to one immediately adjacent to the Cultural District; and 8 WHEREAS, the Lowertown neighborhood within the downtown of Saint Paul features numerous cultural resources, 9 including the national-award winning Mears Park, a nationally-recognized in-residence artists community and the 10 City's Farmer's Market; and this same neighborhood hosts numerous cultural activities, including the recent Titanic 11 exhibit at Union Depot, the annual Arts Crawl which showcase the neighborhoods restaurants and art galleries; and 12 WFIEREAS, the riverfront area in downtown Saint Paul is poised to become a visitor and cultural center in Saint 13 Paul—the headwaters of the Mississippi; and 14 WHEREAS, the entire downtown will benefit from the opportunity to participate in the City's Cultural STAR 15 program; now, therefore, be it 16 RESOLVED, that the Cultural District geographic boundaries of the City of Saint Paul are hereby amended to be the 17 area bordered by Interstate 94 to the north, the Lafayette Bridge to the east, the Mississippi River to the south; and 18 Chestnut Road to the west.
