00-113�R1GINAL Presented Referred To Committee Date 1 WE�REAS, attempts will be made at the national level to increase the size, weight, and allowable number oftrailers 2("bottoms") in proposed legislation entitled the "Transportation Equity Act for the 21 St Cenhuy ("T`EA 21 "); and 3 WHEREAS, bigger and heavier trucks pose a serious threat to highway safety because of their added weight and 4 inherent instability, and will inevitably lead to more accidents and more fatalities in such accidents; and 5 WHEREAS, bigger and heavier trucks will cause greater acceleration in the deterioration ofour country's highways, 6 roads and bridges, causing serious and expensive damage to such highways, roads and bridges; now, therefore, be 7 it 8 RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Saint Paul does hereby state its opposition to legislation at any level 9 of government which would allow increases in the size and weight of trucks, and supports the position of the 10 Minnesota Alliance for Safe Highways on such legislation.
