WHEREAS, bicycling is an inexpensive activity that promotes
fitness, good health, and can be enSoyed by young children,
teens, adults and senior citizens; and
WHEREAS, more and more peopte are turning to bicycling as an
� economical , healthy and non-polluting form of transportation; and
WHEREAS, many Minnesota agencies inciuding the Departments
of Transportat i on, Natura 1 Resources, Pub t i c Safety a 1 ong w i th
more than 50 cities are involved in prornoting bicycle education,
safety and enforcement, transportation facilities and traiis; and
WHEREAS, during 5ave the Children Week (April 30 - May 5),
the 1 oca 1 Sa ve the Ch i 1 dren Off i ce w i 1 1 be conduct i ng educat i ona 1
workshops on bicycle safety, bicycle maintenance and the ways in
which bicycles are used across the world as means of
transportation and in community development; NOW THEREFORE BE IT
RESOLVED: that the week of May 6 - 12 be recognized as
Minnesota Bike Week, a time for communities to promote bicycle
safety with awareness campaigns, educational programs in the
schools, and community bicycle activities. This week will
culminate in Twin Cities Cycle Sunday, scheduled for May 13,
1984. A city tour between Minneapolis and St. Paul will help to
promote Save the Children, an international self-help
organization conunitted to helping communities help themselves, as
we 1 1 as b i cyc 1 i ng and b i cyc 1 e safety.
