GEORGE LATIMER
MAYOR
MEMORANDUM
TO: Members of the City Council
FROM: Jane L. Hogan
Assistant Cit ttorney
DATE: October 23, 1985
RE: Claim against the City of Saint Paul
by George B. Rieschl
Mr. Rieschl is a 63 year old gentleman who was attending a show
at the Arts and Science Council Theater. He had parked in the
Public Health parking lot, which is used by the theater in the
evenings by agreement with the City. Returning to his car, he
tripped over a concrete curbing in the parking lot. He alleges
that the lighting was insufficient to warn patrons of the hazard.
He fell and broke his nose and glasses . His medical bills and
cost of replacement glasses equals about $450 .
Both the City and the Arts and Science Council have agreed to pay
Mr. Rieschl $500 each. This is considerably less than the antici-
pated costs of litigation.
