99-929Council File # �,�{ - � ° �g Green Sheet # 1 c� O�a -' - ( Presemed Referred To Commit[ee Date 1 WI�REAS, the SECOND SHELF BOOK DRIVE as an effort to collect children's books for redistribution to 2 children throughout Ramsey County; and 3 WHEREAS, sponsors hope to collect 20,000 books during the drive, which runs now through October 1; and 4 WHEREAS, organizers of the used book drive intend to sort the books and distribute them to Saint Paul schoois, 5 cluldren's programs and needy children, with the goal of helping Saint Paul school students nnprove their reading 6 skills and achieve the goal of the new Saint Paul Reads campaign requiring every Saint Paul Public Schools student 7 to read at least 25 books during the 1999-2000 school year; and 8 WIIEREAS, workhouse inmates and others in "Sentence to Serve" programs will sort and help distribute the books 9 to area libraries and schools; and 10 WHEREAS, the book drive is a collaborative effort sponsored by Ramsey County, Juniar League of Saint Paul, ll Saint Paul Neighborhood Energy Consortium, Saint Pau1 Schools, Super Cycle, Saint Paul Branch Libraries, and 12 the Pioneer Press; 13 NO W, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Saint Paui Ciry Council urges the citizens of Saint Paul to "GET 14 OUT THE BOOKS" and donate new and gently used children's books through curbside recycling during the weeks 15 of September 20 and October l, or by drop-off at The Red Balloon or Hungry Mind Book Stores on Grand Avenue; 16 or at any Saint Paui Library.
