Steve felt lass will hold smoke but it will not hold the heat
or flame. S oke i the biggest threat , he said, it kills people 80%

John Cook e plain d he is the owner of one of the units n the
five unit building He still has trouble with the stairw 11 en-
closure. He said e felt Alice had worked out the proble s with
the board. H exp ained the kitchen is physically separ ted frorn
the area wh re th glass is . However, he said he is m re con-
cerned that hey ould be reyuired to put closures on a 1 the
doors . He a ain p ir�ted out putting chicken wire type gl ss would
ruin the aes hetic of trie building. The Fire Marshal po' nted out
to him that, in h s opinion, there is no comparison betw en life
safety and a sthet cs . He further said the only trade of he would
make here w uld b a sprinkling system in the entire building. Mr.
Cook pointe out hat the person renting his ur� it is han icapped
and migh� ha e a h rd time opening doors with closures on them.
Mr . Zaccard aid �t ey are always willing to make an excep ion
if the resid nt ca demonstrate her inability to open the door.
BOARD ACTION Glen Gausman moved that the variance be d nied on
the enclose sta rwells , and the variance be granted f om the
wired glass in th doors , on condition a smoke activate alarm
system be in talle in all tr�ree stairs, hard wired and rranged
so that if a y det ctor went off, all atarms would sound arid on
conciition t at t e basement stairs be treated on the u derside
with 5/8" sh et ro k as tr,ey are open to the heating p1a t .
