WHER AS, m ssionary priests such as Joseph Cretin,

WHER AS, a chapel was built in 1841 near the banks of
the Missi sippi River in the village then known as "Pig '
Eye; " and
WHER AS, t is church was blessed by Father Lucian altier
on Novemb r lst 1841 , and dedicated to St. Paul, "the postle
of ation , " at dedication ceremonies attended by the c ' tizens
of he se tleme t; and
WHER AS, o that day, Father Galtier expressed a w' sh to
the citiz ns ga hered there, that the town likewise be amed
"St.' Paul " and
WHER AS, t e citizens of the village agreed that t e
set 'lemen shou d be renamed "St. Paul; " and

WHER AS, t e name St. Paul became so popular wit the
citizens hat t ey were able to defeat the efforts by s me
members o the .S. Congress to do away with the name a the
time; of t e cre tion of the terri�ory of Minnesota; and
WHER AS, o November lst, 1849, on the eig�h anniv rsary
of the de icati n of the Chapel of St. Paul, an Act to
Incorpora e the Town of St. Paul in the County of Ramse
was appro ed by the Legislative Assembly of the Territo y of
Minnesota and
