Minnesota Museum of Art and the Center for Arts Criticism will invite media artist� and leading edia art critic Douglas Davis to Saint Paul for a one-day symposTum on the m dta arts. Mr. Davis will visit Saint Paui on Monday, December 16, 1985. Douglas Davts is an artist, wrtter, and teacher. �As an artist he has worked intensivety in video, performence, printmaking, and drawing since t e mid-60�s. He has also written and lectured extensively about erchltecture, phot raphy, television, polttics, social lssues, and art theory. Formerly art ritic of Newsweek magazine, he 1s nohr senior �rriter specialiiing in architecture, ph ography and cor�temporary ideas. His "V1deo Obscura" pubiished 1n 1982 was one f the first comprehenslve statements about the nature and 1�nplications of vTd as an ert form. A primary purpose for this syrt+posium, Mhich would fe�t re medTe artists and critic Douslas Davis, Mill be to cultivate a critical framework fo appreciating the media arts and their impact upon this comnuntty. The sya�osium wiil be resented as part of New Worlcs/Saint Paul serles which has been co-presented by the clty of Satnt PauilDepartment of Pisnning end �conomic Development and Ntnnesota Museum of Art. The Center for Arts Criticism is invited to co-sponsor the symposl m by providing the folloking assistance: � � ° sssemble a panei of ixal medis arts c�itics to respond to the D ugias Davis� - �emarks at a public lecture; ° .�500 to provide honorai� for local panelists, and partial expens s for Davist vislt and the publlc lectu�e; and, i ° coordinate a two-hour sesslon on December 9 when Davis can meet ith a group of local media and medla arts c�itics asserr�led by the Center. The Saint Paul Pioneer Press/Dispatch nexspaper has been asked to e the p�ima�y sponsor for the symposium. The finsl decision to present the symposium Mi I be contingent upon the neNpaper�s sponsorship, Khich vre expect to have confirmed no I ter than November 25.
