STARR, CITY ATTORNEY .. `0e,e 647 City Hall,Saint Paul,Minnesota 55102 612-298-5121 GEORGE LATIMER MAYOR M E M O R A N D U M TO: Members of the City Council FROM: Walter A. Bowser "--° a'-3 Assistant City Attorney DATE: January 16, 1985 RE: Claims against the City of Saint Paul by John Hanggi and Rose Hanggi The above claimants request reimbursement for damages and injuries sustained to John Hanggi ancl Rose Hanggi on August 3 , 1980, as a result of a motorcycle/police suburban truck accident at or near the intersection of White Bear Avenue and Orange Street. The matter was set for a January 14 , 1985 jury trial . John Hanggi sustained what may be characterized as significant injuries. Rose Hanggi ' s injury was less significant. The primary issue in the case was liability. Because of the extent of the injuries it is possible a jury could award either or both of them a large award while it is possible a jury could have found no or minimum liability on the City. To eliminate the unknown or uncertainty of a possible jury verdict, this office approves the settlement of these cases by the payment of $15, 000 to John Hanggi and his attorney and $5, 000 to Rose Hanggi and her attorney.
