85-98 M�NITE - C�TV CLERK PINK - FINANCE GITY OF SAINT PAUL Council �,,/ CANqRV - DEPARTMENT J(/y BLUE - MAYOR File NO. � �V � Cou i Resolution . . , Presented By �� ' � Referred To �i t . � ate Out of Committee By Date WHEREAS, it is in the best intexests of the citizens of the City of St. Paul to have an a.£fordable and reliable souxce of food and a healthy state economy; and WHEREAS, ag,riculture account� £or up to 40% of the state economy; and iNHEREAS, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture projects that 13,000 of Minnesota's family farmers may lose theix farms within two years without remedial action; and WHEREAS, thousands of Minnesotans engaged in the production, processing, transportation, sale and finance of food products may lose their jobs or businesses as a direct result of the los$ o� family farms; and WHEREAS, the loss of these farms, jobs and businesses could severely restrict the long-term economic development of St. Paul and communities across the state; THEREFORE, LET TT BE RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of St. Paul that to begin the process of solving the challenges facing Minnesota agriculture the Minnesota Legislature is urged to provide a mechanism of buying time and aiding f armers in securing operating capital and the retention of their farmland as embodied in S.F. 54; and LET TT FURTHER BE RESOLVED, that the City Council ca11s upon the Governor of the State of Minnesota and the Minnesota congressional delegation to support federal administrative actions or legislation to provide for the long-term restructuring of farm debt and an effective 1985 Food and Farm Act to provide for stable farm income and a reliable food supply for the needy and all citizens.
