WHEREAS, 25 years ago Michael Harrington wrote "The Other America," which
influenced many citizens to become involved in fighting poverty; and
WHEREAS, Michael Harrington's writings and speeches led to the war on poverty,
which saw the establishment of Head Start, OEA, VISTA, and other programs; and
WHEREAS, Michael Harrington during those years has reminded people that poverty
continues to be a problem and that communities must take action to establish programs
which fight the causes of poverty; and
WHEREAS, Michael Harrington has acted as a conscience for America, calling
for equitable distribution of wealth; and
WHEREAS, those influenced by Michael Harrington are now working in city halls,
state capitols, and organizations throughout the country; and
WHEREAS, Michael Harrington is scheduled to have surgery and recovery may
take some time; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the city of Saint Paul thanks Michael Harrington for his
contribution to society and wishes him, on behalf of our citizens, a speedy recovery
so his message will continue to be heard and acted upon.
