WHEREAS , Jackie Gleason and Fred Astaire were great
entertainers, each in his own right; and
WHEREAS , Fred Astaire moved and uplifted millions of people
with his dancing (including Ginger Rogers, Cyd Charisse, and
Leslie Caron) ; and
WHEREAS , Jackie Gleason moved millions of people to laughter
and to tears with his acting and clowning for us ; and
WHEREAS, these two great performers inspired us with their
constant striving for perfection, each in his respective field,
and continue to inspire us as we remember their work; and
WHEREAS, we appreciate how lucky we are that so much of their
work is on film and is still available to move and inspire us ; and
WHEREAS, we mourn their passing; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the City Council hereby pays tribute to Fred
Astaire and Jackie Gleason for enriching our lives.
