WHEREAS, the Old Roman, John "Maroosh" Mariucci, the Godfather of
Minnesota hoc ey, lost his overtime battle to cancer on Monday, March 23,
1987; and
WHEREAS, John Mariucci has long honored the State of Minnesota as an
All American hockey player, coach of the University of Minnesota hockey
team, and st r for the Chicago Blackhawks in the National Hockey League;
and
WHEREAS, John has honored his country by exemplary performances in
coaching Unit d States hockey teams at international levels, highlighted
by winning a ilver medal in the 1956 Olympics; and
WHEREAS, his multiple roles as player, coach and builder in the
sport of h ckey have been recognized by his enshrinement in both the
United State and the National Hockey League Halls of Fame; and
WHEREAS John's unending advocacy for the development and
encouragemen of Minnesota amateur, high school and college hockey
players hav made him a beacon of hope and achievement for the entire
Minnesota h ckey community and a symbol of Am�erican hockey in general;
and
WHEREAS, his warmth and caring attitude is reflected in his special
humanitaria interests such as Camp Confidence for mentally retarded and
the Mariucc' Inner City hockey starter prograffi; now, therefore,
BE IT ESOLVED, that we9 the City Council of St. Paul, do hereby
proclaim to ay, Thursday, March 26, 1987, as "John Mariucci Day" and pay
tribute to im and his memories by flying flags at half mast.
