99-382Council File # �- �r�c� RESOLUTION WI�REAS, each yeaz Green Sheet # 62367 2 WHEREAS, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 635 fatal workrelated injuries in Minnesotafrom 1991 3 through 1997 — an average of over 90 people killed on the job each yeaz (not counting those who die from lingering, job-related 4 illnesses); and 5 WFiEREAS, the Minnesota Department of Labor & Industry reports that about 450 Minnesotans are hurt at work or become 6 ill from job-related causes each day; and 7 WHEREAS, these injuries, ilinesses and deaths exact a sad toll on workers and their families, and 8 WHEREAS, working people have a right to safe jobs and healthy working conditions; and 9 WHEREAS, April 28th is the anniversazy of the federal Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA) which has helped to 10 si�ificantly reduce workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities; and 11 WHEREAS, Apri128th is observed throughout the United States as W orkers' Memorial Day, to mourn the victims of workplace 12 hazards and renew the fight for stronger safety and health protecGOns; now therefore 13 BE IT RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council invites all our residents of our city to observe a moment of silence on 14 Workers' Memorial Day, Wednesday, Apri128, in remembrance of those who have suffered and died on the job. 15 MOREOVER, we applaud and encourage the efforts of the working people of Saint Paul to organize and mobilize -- at work 16 and through khe legislative and political process -- for more effecdve safety and health practices and protections.
