Now that the assessment is up for ratification I would like to reiterate my thoughts for the record. It's a long story, but I will be as brief as possible. When I received the notice for a new sidewalk in the summer of 198 my sidewalk was in relatively good condition. I had two 5 had one crack each. These were caused by a cement truck Pnnthe early 195's. The cracks had remained tighti they were even and offered absolutely no hazard. One end of another inch. This low portion could have easily beenefilledsinkwithublack- top as so many are . The remaining panels were level and free of cracks. I talked to a Mr. Don Kray in the Sidewalk Department. He a had mapped out the work and he indicated that in addition toPtheently three panels mentioned above I had one that was heaved by a boulevard tree . This simply was not true. I measured this so called "heave" and it was less than 4". I called my councilman, Mr. Masanz and was referred to his Aide Mr. Red Vanek. After looking at my sidewalk. Mr. Vanek called me and indicated that I did not need a new walk and would not get one . He said that the project would probably be postponed and that it would not be necessary for me to attend the hearing. I don't recall the exact timing of all this, but a couple of months must have gone by when my wife called me at work and said our sidewalk had been ripped up. Within a couple of da s a sidewalk had been torn up and replaced. y Perfectly satisfactory The workmanship of the new walk was ver while drying and as a result, a number of PleavesIwereSembeddedeind the concrete. As these disappeared they left small holes. Also a couple of rocks have worked their way out leaving holes. A boy rode his bike on it before it was fully dry so I have tracks running the full length. ``' . . . (,f--7 i' As I recall, the construction debris was left for about two weeks - ` and it took calls from myself and other neighbors to finally get it cleaned up. , More weeks went by before the black dirt was brought in for the area next to the walk. This, too required phone calls to get accomplish- ed and finally was done in such a sloppy fashion that I ended up paying $50.00 to have the area sodded. ' As I recall, there was one house on the block where the sidewalk in poor condition and needed to be replaced. Why the rest of theWas work was done remains a mystery to me, unless, of course, it was to make the project more worthwhile for the Contractor and perhaps others. Since this matter occurred I have become very aware of the condition of sidewalks as I walk through the Como area, and I have seen many that are in much worse condition than those replaced in our block. In closing I think that this entire matter represents Cit Gove >.<... ,...:»,..,..,+-rt,.+,,_.tir, ' . .. *"t;K'`'%aR,k+r<r M.p.,...:, ...... and Service at its worst.
