WHEREAS, the Saint Paul Heritage Preservation Commission is authorized by
Chapter 73 of the Saint Paul Legislative Code to "...work for the continuing
education of the citizens of the City of Saint Paul with respect to the
historic and architectural heritage of the city..." and to "...solicit gifts
and contributions to be made to the city and to assist in the preparation of
applications for grant funds to be made to the city for the purpose of
heritage preservation;"
and
WHER�AS, the Heritage Preservation Commission has responded to this charge in
its support of the 1983 Historic Sites Survey of Saint Paul and Ramsey County
and its endeavors to publish an architectural history book of Saint Paul based
on this survey; and
WHEREAS, the proposed publication will be the first comprehensive examination
of Saint Paul 's architectural history and development and will help to
increase the interest of the general public in the history and preservation of
Saint Paul 's rich heritage; and
NHEREAS, the Heritage Preservation Commission and the Department of Planning
and Economic Development have solicited over $30,000 in grants from the
Minnesota Historical Society through the Certified Local Government grants
program, which has resulted in preliminary research and two chapters of the
proposed four chapter book being completed; and
WHEREAS, the Minnesota Historical Society has recommended that additional
outside funding be found to complete the remaining two chapters;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the City Council of the City of Saint Paul
supports the writing of the architectural history publication and the work of
PED staff, the Chair of the Heritage Preservation Commission, and the Mayor in
seeking additional foundation funding to complete the remaining two chapters.
