WHEREAS, the production "Sophiatown" will be performed at
the Actors Theatre from June 21 through June 26, 1988, by the
Market Theatre and the Junction Avenue Theatre Companies of
Johannesburg, South Africa; and
WHEREAS, "Sophiatown" has received international praise and
attention as a powerful account of a vibrant, racially mixed
suburb of Johannesburg in the early 1950 ' s; and
WHEREAS, the production of "Sophiatown" is a culmination of
extraordinary commitment and work from the director Malcolm
Purkey and- the Acto�s Siphiwe Khumalo, Ramolao Makhene, Nandi
Myembe, Doreen Mazibuko, Author Molepo, Gladys Mothlale, Patrick
Shai and Megan Kruskal; and
WHER�AS, The Actors Theatre, the Market Theatre and the
Junction Avenue Theatre have agreed to dedicate the opening night
performance of "Sophiatown" to Lawaaikamp, South Africa, Saint
Paul ' s Sister Community which is currently under the threat of
forced removal; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council recognizes the
inspiring and moving tribute this production presents of a spirit
of life and freedom in South Africa; and, be it
FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council declares
June 21 through June 27 as "Sophiatown" week in Saint Paul.
