WHEREAS, the City of Charleston, Sout Carolina was damaged extensively by
Hurricane Hugo in late September; and
WHEREAS, an estimated 15,000 trees we e destroyed by the storm and the City
of Charleston was not prepared for th great amount of cleanup necessary;
and
WHEREAS, the Mayor of Charleston aske for assistance from other cities; and
WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul , in c operation with Saint Paul Companies,
Delta Air Lines and Soo Line Railroad Company, organized a relief effort to
aid the people of Charleston; and
WHEREAS, a seven member team from the Forestry Section of the Saint Paul
Division of Parks and Recreation volu teered to go to Charleston from
October 2 to October 14 to help in th cleanup effort; and
WHEREAS, despite a delay in the arri al of their heavy equipment, the crew
began work immediately with the tools available and took initiative in
working on various cleanup projects, ften tackling more difficult
assignments, including removing trees from damaged homes and clearing an
historic City park which had been com letely destroyed; and
WHEREAS, the team which included fore an Walter Jensen and tree trimmers
Cindy Fowler, Dan Larson, Rick Matsch na, John Pfluger, Frank Saete and
Steve Vorlicky, worked diligently 14 ours each day to accomplish as much as
possible during their stay; now, ther fore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Mayor and the City Council of the City of Saint Paul
speaking for its citizenry take pride in the accomplishments of these
employees and do express our gratitud and officially recognize the team for
the superb manner in which they serve as representatives of our City.
