WHEREAS, our city is only one part of the larger community of our
country , and the people of Sa ' nt Paul are known for their proven
commitment to assisting those in need in other places, such as the
people of South Carolina who truggle now to rebuild their lives
following the devastation of last week 's hurricane , and now face
overwhelming obstacles inclu ing the lack of adequate shelter,
equipment, and the resources n cessary for the clearing of wreckage
and restoration of housing; a d
WHEREAS, The St. Paul Compan 'es has once again demonstrated its
generosity , foresight, and de ication to the betterment of society
by offering a contribution o $25 ,000 to the City of Saint Paul
wh i ch w i 1 1 make i t poss i b 1 e f r the C i ty to ref 1 ect the best w i shes
and caring of its citizens by sending a team of professional
foresters to Charleston , Sou h Carolina; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Mayor and he City Council of the City of Saint
Paul do sincerely thank and d clare their gratitude to The St. Paul
Companies, and to the leaders ip which has made this latest act of
magnanimity possible; and do xpress on behalf of all citizens the
most genuine appreciation for this and all other estimable
benefactions.

WHEREAS , The St. Paul Companie has made invaluable contributions
to the City of Saint Paul over the past 136 years ; and
WHEREAS , these contributions h ve made real the best visions of the
most talented and creative citizens of the community, and developed
new leadership , for the benefi of all who live here as well as for
future generations; and
WHEREAS, the outstanding rec rd of good works by The St. Paul
Companies includes not only ome of the most important physical
improvements in the City of Sa nt Paul , such as the Ordway Theatre ,
District Heating , Lowertown, a d the Riverfront; but also numerous
social and educational issues including literacy , juvenile crime
prevention , public art, housi g issues and the revitalization of
neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, The St. Paul Compani s was one of the first corporations �
in Minnesota to recognize the needs of the newest of Saint Paul ' s •
citizens , the Southeast Asian , and to find ways to assist these
New Americans, once again tak 'ng a leadership role in a vital city
issue, proving a commitment to building a stronger future by
investing in our essential hu an resources; and
