This fil ealt with an amendment to Chapter 370 of the Saint Paul Legi 1 tive Code concerning the appointment of inembers of the Board o xaminers for certificates of compe- tency. � During the public discus i n of the matter, you wished our office to redraft this docu e t to make it gender neutral . We have undertaken to red a t it to conform with your wishes , however, the words "master" a d "journeyman" still appear therein. These terms are historical i nature , going back to the medieval guilds and have long been a en up as terms used by trade unions. In conformance with thei sage, many of our State laws and ordinances use the same ter i ology. While we appreciate your c ncern regarding the proper nomen- clature, we respectfully u gest that any attempt to make our laws gender neutral be d n on an over-all basis and not a specific amendment such as h enclosed. I am given to understand t at the issue you have raised has also been noted in our e islature and other city councils , and you may want to see w at developments are being pursued by them regarding a mas iv revamping of terms and phrases to make them gender neut a . It is suggested that you may wish to pursue whatever a p oach is being utilized to address the over-all issue and tie 'nt that process instead of a specific amendment to one chapter of ou Legislative Code .
