2 A RESO�LUTION CONCERNING INCREASED PENALTIES FOR
3 REP�AT VIOLATIONS OF "ORDERS FOR PROTECTION"

5 WHEREAS, under Minnesota Statute 518B.01 it is a misdemeanor to violate an Order for
6 Protection ("domestic abu�se restraining order"); and
7
8 WHEREAS, according tp Sta.te law, regardless of the number of times a defendant has been
9 convicted for viola�ing swch a restraining order, the seriousness of the offense does not increase; and
10
11 WHEREAS, violations o� Orders for Protection usually involve an ongoing pattem of harassment
12 against one victim and thus need to be treated very seriously; and
13
14 WHEREAS, any s�rious�effort to stem the dramatic increases of domestic abuse and eradicate the
15 problem must provfide legitimate protection to victims by forcefully penalizing violators of Orders
16 for Protection;

18 NOW, THEREFORE, BIE IT RESOLVED, that the Legislature of the State of Minnesota is hereby
19 requested to adop� incr$ased penalties for second and subsequent convictions of Orders for
20 Protection issued wnder Minnesota Statutes Section 518B.01.
