1 Whereas, St. Paul and agasaki formed a Sister City relationship in 1955 in the hope that this
2 association would foster a better understanding between the people of these two cities as they came
3 to know each other thr ugh exchange programs; and

5 Whereas, in the past 'rty five years there have been pairings of institutions and cooperative
6 projects that have brou t people together to share our distinctive cultural attributes and discover
7 the values we hold in c mmon as inhabitants of the Earth; and
8
9 Whereas, both St. Paul nd Nagasaki share a commitment to world peace and have regularly
10 celebrated the Sister Ci1�y relationship as a symbol of world peace; and

12 Whereas, August 9, 199 marks the 45th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki which shall
13 be commemorated at a eace lantern float on the Mississippi River at Harriet Island, beginning at
14 7:00 PM; ,

16 NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the St. Paul City Council hereby declares August 9,
17 1990 as "Nagasaki Day" �n the City of St. Paul to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the St. Paul-
18 Nagasaki Sister City Re�ationship, the oldest such sister city relationship in the country; and be it
19
20 FURTHER RESOLVE� that the St. Paul City Council supports the commitment to world peace
21 represented by the Nag aki Remembrance ceremony and invites a11 St. Paul area residents to
22 participate in this event.
