RESOLUTION SUPPORTING METROPOLTTAN STATE UNIVERSITY'S EFFORTS
TO FULFILL ITS MISSION AS A COMPREHENSIVE URBAN UNIVER3ITY
WHEREAS, Metropolitau State University is a comprehensive urban university committed to meeting the
higher educafion needs of Twin Ciries metropolitan azea residents; and
3 Wf�REAS, the City of Saint Paul is home to the largest campus of Metropolitan State University and its
4 administrative headquarters; and
WF�REAS, Metropolitan State University maintains strong ties with the City of Saint Paul and East Metro
business communities, and is thereby uniquely qualified to identify and respond to the area's business
employment needs; and
8 WHEREAS, Metropolitan State University provides accessible, high quality liberal arts and professional
9 education to the cifizens and communities of the Twin Cities metropolitan azea; and
10 WHEREAS, Metropolitan State University continues to emphasize serving under-served groups, including
11 communities of color and non-traditional or place-bound adult students; and
12 WI�REAS, the Chancellor of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (NINSCLn system has been
13 directed by the Minnesota State Legislature to develop a metropolitan planning study of the Twin Cities'
14 MNSCU institutions; now therefore let it be
15 RESOLVED, that Saint Paul City Council acknowledges the critical and unique role played by Metropolitan
16 State University in meeting the higher education needs of Saint Paul residents including communities of color
17 and non-traditional students; and be it
18 FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council opposes any attempts to reduce or eliminate lower
19 level coutse offerings at Metropolitan State University or otherwise lessen the University's ability to fulfill its
20 mission and maintain its status as a comprehensive urban university; and be it
21 FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council requests that Metropolitan State University be given
22 fair consideration in future budgets and supports the consiruction of a student and community library at the
23 University's Saint Paul campus.
