WHEREAS, the Schmidt Brewery has been a landmark in Saint Paul on West
Seventh Street since 1901; and
WHEREAS, the Schmidt plant directly employs 215 workers and impacts on
other employees in the distribution business; and
WHEREAS, in February, the G. Heileman Brewing Company offered for sale
the Saint Paul brewery facility, together with the Schmidt brand and
other brands; and
WHEREAS, on May 14th, Heileman re�ected all bids for its Schmidt
plant, refusing to consider new bids and had set plans to close the
Schmidt plant on June 23rd; and
WHEREAS, an investment group led by Schmidt's largest distributor, ,
Sohan Sahota, reached an agreement with Heileman on May 21st to
acquire the plant and the Schmidt brand, contingent on finding
financing for the purchase within ten days; and
WHEREAS, the closing of the Schmidt plant and potential selling or
removing of the equipment would negatively impact the City and would
create a blighted vacant bui.lding, a building that would be extremely
difficult to find a reuse for, as witnessed by the vacated Grain Belt
plant in Minneapolis; and
WHEREAS, Schmidt's 135 years of brewing history in.the City of Saint
Paul have permanently linked that label to the Cit.y and to the West
Seventh/Fort Road Neighborhood; and

WHEREAS, retention of existing jobs and businesses in Saint Paul is a
high priority in the City's economic development plan;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the administration is requested to
instruct appropriate staff to work with the Housing and Redevelopment
Authority and the Port Authority of the City of Saint Paul, Minnesota,
to assist the Sohan group in securing acceptable financing for the
acquisition of the Schmidt Brewery Company plant and facilities.
