ANSWER: A. • We hav approached Sunny Jo Emerson of the Metropolitan Council with this proposal. She has assured us that this is impossible. The term of the grant expired on February 15, 1990 and cannot b renewed. B. Accordi g to Ms Emerson, there is no similar grant avail- able. Howev r, they do have grant monies earmarked for capital expenditures for the purpose of landfill abatement and for educa- tional activ'ties pertaining to recycling. QUESTION II: What is the scope of the recycling program in the City Hall/Co rt House? 1NSWER: A. The Coun y last year initiated a pilot program to provide to employees o the City Hall/Court House the opportunity to re- cycle most o fice paper (as described on the attached instruc- tions labele CH/CH. ) B. In Octo er of 1989 they expanded the program to include all floors. C. During he year of 1989, they recycled approximately '70 tons of paper. D. They ar currently looking into the possibility of expanding the program o include newspapers and ground wood computer paper. E. They ar also recycling aluminum pop cans on all floors. F. The c unty buys its cleaning fluids in bulk, refilling reusable co tainers; so it doesn' t produce plastic or glass bottles in q antities sufficient to warrant a recycling program. 1 . ' _ QIIESTION III: What is the scope of the recycling program in the City Owned Dow Town Office Buildinqs? . ANSWER: A. The down town office building recycling program, which we began last yea , provides each employee working in the City Hall Annex, Public afety Building, Public Safety Annex, Public Health Building and M in Library the opportunity to recycle most office paper (as des ribed on the attached instructions labeled Down Town Office Bu ldings. ) B. These bu' ldings comprise over 400, 000 square feet of space and contain o er 1, 000 work stations for office workers. An average of abo t five tons of paper is recycled from these loca- tions each mon h. C. The Main ibrary and the City Hall Annex are also recycling cardboard boxe through this program. D. However, he recycling contractor does not now--nor does he foresee a time when he will--pick up newsprint. He specializes in the white aper which is produced in large quantities in office buildin s; and he feels that the market for newsprint is not sufficient y strong to warrant inclusion in his program. E. We have s nt all managers of City facilities copies of the State of Minn sota recycling ordinance [115A. 151] , a copy of which is attac ed, requiring that state agencies and municipal governments beg'n recycling at least three different materials. F. All build'ngs listed above have been recycling aluminum pop cans for some t'me. G. The Main ibrary uses a lot of vinegar, which they buy in one gallon pla tic jugs, for window washing. They began recyc- iing these jugs early this year. H. The Publ 'c Health Building has begun a similar plastics recycling progr m. 2 . _ / CH/CH i , , , , . .
