1 WHEREAS, the Federal "Earned Income Credit" can benefit families who make under $19,340 with
2 a potential tax credit of up to $910.� per family; and

4 WHEREAS, the "Earned Income Credit" is a work incentive in that it rewards those who seek and
5 retain employment, rather than public assistance; and
6
7 WHEREAS, the "Earned Income Credit" boosts the local economy while giving low income families
8 purchasing power; and
9
10 WHEREAS, it is estimated that if 1,000 eligible families in St. Paul receive the "Eamed Income
11 Credit," nearly $1,000,000 would be available to assist these families; and
12
13 WHEREAS, many of the eligible low income families nationwide do not utilize the "Earned Income
14 Credit;" and
15
16 WHEREAS, the information campaign about the "Eamed Income Credit" that was conducted last
17 year was an apparent success; be it
18
19 RESOLVED, by the City Council of St. Paul that the City strongly supports a continuation of last •
20 years public information campaign in cooperation with other interested organizations serving low
21 income people regarding the "Earned Income Credit" in an effort to increase participation among
22 low-income families; and be it
23
24 FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City will provide information and distribute flyers to other
25 interested groups to assist eligible families apply for the "Earned Income Credit."
